Hands-On Math: Pattern Blocks is an interactive learning environment where students explore and discover geometric shapes and their properties. Students use the Pattern Blocks virtual manipulative to complete a variety of activities. The learning activities involve making designs and patterns, learning the names and properties of shapes, and a variety of other concepts related to beginning geometry. Encourage students to make designs with the blocks and to group and classify the blocks according to geometric properties. Have them click on the different buttons and see what they do. Free play will familiarize them with the operation of the app, and allow them to experience the fun of mathematical discovery. By using the blocks in the various activities, students will develop an intuitive understanding of some of the more abstract concepts of geometry. Encourage students to summarize the information and relationships that they discovery while using the app through oral discussion.
